21 DAY WATER CHALLENGE
I would like to begin by thanking you for joining me in this CHALLENGE, I call it a challenge, because for the many people that don’t like water, that’s exactly what it is!! I presented the challenge because as a Naturopathic Doctor, I CARE, and I see so many health challenges because of this missing, and misunderstood nutrient. My mission is to help people take charge of their health by empowering them with information, that leads to application, and health transformation. There are a few testimonials on the home page of this site, and still more to come.
What is water, and why is it so vitally important to our health? Water is defined as a transparent liquid, a compound of hydrogen and oxygen. It has a freezing point of 32 degrees fahrenheit, and a 212 degree boiling point.
It is so vitally important to our health because the human body is made up of 60% water. We lose water through sweating, breathing and exercise. If the output becomes greater than the input, then we will become dehydrated. Dehydration is detrimental to our health because we need water for so many physiological functions. We need water: to make saliva, we need it to make gastric juices, we need it to assist the kidneys in cleansing and moving metabolic waste out of the body, it is need to facilitate the exchange of nutrients and waste on a cellular level, it is needed to prevent constipation, and it is needed to maintain blood volume levels.
Dehydration is the cause of: digestive issues, migraine headaches, body odor, fatigue, poor skin (dry and dehydrated) and hair health, edema (swelling), premature aging and wrinkling. If you want to slow down the aging process, and maintain beautiful healthy hair, drinking water on a daily basis is a good place to start.
You may think that because of your current fluid intake of juice, sodas, tea, and coffee, that you are getting adequate fluids. The problem is that your body recognizes, soda, juice (because of the processed sugar) and some teas (because of chemicals sprayed on them), coffee ( is a diuretic, and is a stimulant), and sodas because of it’s sugar content, to be toxic. You need water to flush out, and neutralize the negative effects of these TOXIC beverages. The moral of the liquid toxic story is that NOTHING replaces WATER!!
The body is very intelligent, when the bible says that we are fearfully and wonderfully made it is true. God has placed so many checks and balances in our body to sustain life, we may not be healthy because of the dietary and lifestyle choices that we make, but we will be alive. We don’t want to just be alive, we want to be healthy and live a quality life.
DId you know that if you don’t drink enough water, when the undigested portion of your food (feces) reaches the large intestines, it is liquid. Your body will assess how much water you drank, if you did not drink enough, it will absorb as much water as it can from the liquid feces back into to body, using it to make your saliva, gastric juices, assist in flushing the kidneys, using it as liquid transport in the exchange of nutrients and waste on a cellular level, and maintaing your body’s blood volume levels. The reabsorption of water from feces back into the body is one of the main reasons why we suffer from constipation. Can you imagine that when you don’t drink water, your internal environment become a toxic waste site, and a site for a disease waiting to happen..
Drinking WATER is the first step in the DETOXIFICATION PROCESS, and WEIGHT LOSS, it is a major key. It is the main fluid that acts as a means of transportation in removing toxic waste from the body. There are two reasons why DIS-EASE presents, it is either because of TOXICITY or a DEFICIENCY.
Just like our nails and hair grow, and our skin turns over every 28-35 days (that process slows down with age). By not drinking water, you are allowing your body to build and sustain a new you with toxic waste.. this might sound gross, but I really want you to get a visual of what you are doing to your body when you don’t drink water; you might as well go to the toilet and mix up a bowel movement, and drink it!!!! I know that you are probably saying YUK, and that is exactly what I want you to say, I want you to be so disgusted that it inspires you to CHANGE (*_*).. !!!
Based on the few water facts that I have given you, I think that you would agree that if you are not drinking water, it’s time to make a change!!
WHAT ARE THE RULES OF THE CHALLENGE?
YOU CAN EAT FOOD DURING THIS CHALLENGE, YOU SHOULD TRY TO ELIMINATE SNACKS, AND INTRODUCE MORE FRUIT AND VEGETABLES INTO YOUR DIET!!
#1) You must drink half of your body weight in ounces of water daily, not to exceed 100 ounces. If you are 150 pounds, your daily intake will be 75 ounces. If you are 300 pounds, your daily intake will be 100 ounces. If you exercise, you should hydrate while working out, your water intake while exercising is not included in your daily intake. Your water intake while exercising is just replacing what you have lost during your workout!!
#2) Eliminate all soda, and fruit juices and coffee (will talk about how coffee is detrimental to your health in a future blog post).. We are trying to clear your system of toxins, and coffee is toxic!!
#3) Because of the Standard American Diet (SAD), which contains so many processed foods that turn into mineral salts and toxic waste, I would recommend distilled water if possible, or aquafina, which is one of the cleanest waters on the market. If you can’t do either one, just drink the best water that you can get your hands on. I don’t want you to go crazy, I just want you to get the best water into your system that you can drink.
#4) Do not drink water with sugars added e.g. vitamin water etc.. This and others like it, have sugar in it, your body recognizes sugar as a toxin, and drinking it becomes counter productive with regard to cleansing..
#5) If you absolutely hate water, you can add fresh fruit, but “NO SUGAR PLEASE”.. you can add whatever fruit you like, let it sit for a few hours and then drink it. Some healthy additives are: Cucumber and mint, strawberries and blueberries, lemon and lime with or without mint. One of my favorite morning rituals is to boil water, and add a few slices of lemon and squeeze some of the juice into the water, this stimulates digestion, alkalizes the internal environment, and causes the gall bladder to release bile into the colon, which stimulates bowel movements. Warm lemon water is also detoxifying.. FYI: Please alternate between fruit infused water and plain water (*_*).
#6) There is a lot of talk bout alkaline water, if God wanted us to drink alkaline water to sustain life and health, he would not have made water neutral. Alkaline water is great if your internal environment is acid, but if not, it can be detrimental to your health. Select your water source carefully and consciously.
#7) When you are drinking your personal daily requirement of water, please drink it in divided doses, you do not want to send your kidneys into a state of confusion (*_*). I have found that four ounces every 30 minutes works for nubees, I drink about 8-12 ounces an hour. I am an avid water drinker, I don’t leave home without a bottle of water in my bag, if I forget, I will stop at the store and get a bottle. You will definitely be making more trips to the bathroom, but know that in those trips, your body is releasing toxins that if allowed to accumulate, can cause an insult to your health, igniting a disease process. This may seem like a monumental challenge, but I promise that if you do it, your body will love you, and respond with being one step closer to creating a healthier you!!
